Some advice and information from the Damron
Gay Travel Guide:
- Call First! Every element of a listing, from hours
to area codes, may change at any time
- Accommodations: most accommodations, especially bed
and breakfasts, require advance reservations. It's a
good idea to request a brochure ahead of time, and to
be clear about the deposit and cancellation policies
when making reservations.
- Bars and Nightclubs: many codes listed in the guide
apply only a few nights a week, especially when they're
listed as "theme nights". You should call the bar to
verify what is scheduled for which nights. Bars coded
BW (beer and wine) may not serve both!
- Restaurants: all restaurants listed are gay friendly,
those with mostly lesbian clientele are coded MW.
- Cafe's: casual hangouts serving coffee and pastries
but not full menus
- Entertainment and Recreation: Sometimes touristy, maybe
a little kitschy, definitely unusual or commonly overlooked,
that even your friends who've lived there all their lives
won't mind doing with you
- Publications: If you want to know what's new, get one
when you get to town. They're usually free and distributed
in many of the local locations listed. Your best bet,
however, is to go right to the local GLBT or alternative
bookstore to get the latest issue and / or lowdown.
- Gyms: workout facilities, not bathhouses. They're
mostly straight, unless noted.
- Men's Clubs: inlcludes sex clubs, bathhouses, playspaces,
and sex oriented groups
- Men's Services: mostly telephone dating services
- Cruisy Areas: in many cities, you're more likely to
meet vice cops that partners at public grounds. Try the
local bar or bathhouse instead if you're bent on picking
up.
- Events Calendar: lists those "can't miss" events for
the upcoming year, from circuit parties to bear jamborees,
to street fairs and festivals
- Tour Operators: a brief description of what kinds of
tours the tour operator offers
